The School Liaison Officer (SLO)
Our SLO can help! The Barksdale SLO is available to discuss the education related factors that should be considered, since much of what is important in school selection and education planning does not lend itself readily to countable numbers. These include issues related to personal motivation and learning environments, extracurricular scholastic and athletic opportunities, discipline incidents, attendance and tardiness, class size, strength of parent involvement, experience of educators, grading practices, student aspirations and school support, and of course, local, state and national test results.
The SLO is located in the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 413 Curtiss Rd. Hours of operation are 0730 - 1600, Monday - Friday. Please feel free to contact the SLO via email at BarksdaleSchoolLiaison@us.af.mil, or call 318-456-8400.
There has been some misinformation floating on Face book and via other means regarding school attendance zones. Unfortunately this information was directed at Barksdale AFB residents with school age children. In order to clarify the Barksdale AFB position on the matter we offer the following information. The Bossier parish attendance zone policy determines which school a child attends for Barksdale AFB students. Our students' attendance zone consists of Waller Elementary (for student living in Historic housing), and Kerr Elementary (for students living on the east side of the base). In order for your student to go to a different school the parent must request through the Bossier School Board an out of district waiver to attend another school in Bossier or Caddo Parish.
Regardless of the grade of the student you must contact the Bossier Parish School Board special programs department for an out of district waiver if you wish your student to attend a school out of their assigned district. Exceptions to the current waiver policy which affect our school age children consist of the following: If you choose to live on base; high school students have a "choice" of high school selection if a transfer from Bossier High is requested prior to enrollment. If a member is designated as key & essential personnel then the parent can also request a waiver for their student to attend any K-12 school within the Bossier parish school system.
The same process must be followed if you wish your student attend one of the Caddo Parish Magnet Schools. You will additionally need to contact the Caddo Parrish School Board to determine eligibility for your student to attend one of the magnet component programs.
If you have any questions at all please contact me, Reginald Coles, Barksdale AFB School Liaison Officer.
